This FAQ serves as both an answer to many common questions, and a brief rundown of our guidelines for the event. You may view our full guidelines here. We highly recommend you do so if you wish to participate, as it will cover many of the topics here in more detail.

Q: I signed up. What's next?
A: Soon after the sign-up forms close, participants will be contacted via email with a link to a Discord server which will serve as the main hub for all event activity. From then on, all major communication and operations of the event will transpire via Discord.

Q: I don’t want to write or make art, can I still participate?
A: Yes! If you do not want to commit to writing a story or creating an illustration, you may sign-up as a beta reader.

Q: How long does my story have to be?
A: At least 4,000 words. We do not enforce an upper limit, but we highly suggest that you plan for your fic to be no longer than 10,000 words, due to the time limit of the event. Try to plan for a oneshot, or a short multi-chapter fic.

Q: Can I still sign up if I want to create works through a different medium than visual art, such as music or cosplay?
A: Yes, you can sign up as an artist!

Q: Is there a theme?
A: For the 2026 Big Bang, the theme is Friends and Enemies!

Q: In order to participate, does my fic have to utilize the event's theme?
A: Nope! The theme is entirely optional. You'll still be able to write about whatever you'd like (so long as it is within our guidelines), just like in previous Big Bangs.

Q: What content is allowed?
A: Once again, our full guidelines are available in our Master Guide, but to summarize, stories may feature canon characters from any official Sonic media. Original characters are only allowed if they are not the main focus of the story. Creating an AU or OC for your story is fine. We ask that you do not write about pre-existing AUs or OCs to preserve the anonymous nature of the event. We also ask that you do not write sequels or continuations of existing fics.
As children as young as 13 will be allowed to participate in this event, absolutely no sexually suggestive or explicit content is allowed. Additionally, no stories involving incest or pedophilia are allowed. Stories may feature some violence, swearing, or dark themes, but we ask that writers avoid including any overly mature or sensitive topics in their works. Keep it PG-13.

Q:Can I draw for multiple fics/Can I be an artist and a writer?
A:In short, no. You will only have the option to sign up for one of those roles. However, as either a writer or artist you may additionally sign up as a pinch hitter.

Q:Can I choose to work with a specific writer/artist?
A: Not as a part of this event. Writers and artists will be paired up via a blind summary claim process, where the artists will choose fics based on a summary without knowing the identity of the author. A large part of Big Bangs is the surprise element, so we want to preserve this aspect for our event. However, you will have the option to let us know if there is anyone participating in the event that you would NOT like to work with, no matter their role.

Q: How much time will we have to work on our pieces?
A: Writers are required to provide a story summary when signing up. If you are accepted as a writer into the event, you will have from January 2nd to May 23rd of 2026 to work on your fic. Alternatively, you are allowed to start on and even complete your fic entirely before the event begins, should you wish to.
Artists will have from when they are paired with their Writers, beginning on January 31st, until June 13th to work on their pieces.

Q: Where/when/how will the finished works be posted?
A: Artist and writer groups will be assigned a posting day, at which point they will post their part of the collab on their individual blog and tag each other as well as this blog. Writers may post their fic to any hosting site of their choice (AO3, tumblr, fanfiction.net, etc).
Our blog will reblog all the submissions as they’re posted, and following the ending of the event a collection of all the stories and their artworks will be compiled into a masterpost for easy viewing. Additionally, a collection will be created on AO3 for those who chose to post there.
This year’s posting dates are June 21-23, aka Sonic’s Birthday!
